OBITUARY.

The death occurred at Motueka on Saturday evening, after a long and painful illness, of Mr Charles Scott McFarlane, a very old and highly respect- s ed resident of the district. The deceas- 1 ed was born in Glasgow, in 1850, and! I served an apprenticeship to the black-> t smithing trade, partly oJI the Clyde and ] partly in Nelson. In 1871 he removed. I to Motueka and started in business for 1 himself as a horseshoer and general ; smith. The late Mr MeFarlane took a 1 keen interest in Freemasonry. In 1886 7 he' was initiat-ed into Southern Star 1 Lodge, No. 735, E.G. He. was ono of < the founders of the Mctueka Lodge, be- 1 ing its first Junior Deacon, and m 1904 i was installed W.M. He was also a ] member of the Oddfellows' Order and a ] Past Chief Ranger of Court Perseverance, No. 3977, A.O.F. When living 3n . Nelson the deceased took a great inter- ( est in volunteering, and was ono of the i original members of the H Battery of Artillery. In Motueka he also served i on the School Committee, and for a ■ time was a member of the Moti'eka Li- i censing Committee. The deceased leaves a widow and a family of nine sons and two (laughters, who will have \ widespread sympathy in their hercavoment.
