SPECIAL MEETING

A special meeting of '-be Waimea County Council was held yesterday. Present: Cr-;. Everett (chairman), P. Best, A. Drun::iond. J. Corder, and H. Tunnicliffe.

MOTLEKA XXD KIWAKA BRIDGES

A letter \va^, read from the Public Works Department relative to rebuilding the Riuaka and. Motueka bridges, for which .Parliament voted £700 for the first instalment, and £1000 for subsequent instalment, on condition that the Waimea Country Council provided an equal amount. The letter asked the Council to pay its quota into the public account, and the Government would carry out the work. It was unanimously decided not to agree to the proposal, u.nch did not meet with the approval of the Councillors. It was decided to reply that, as the j Council was finding half the money and was responsible for the future maintenance of these bridges, it should carry out the work,, which, it .was] claimed, the Council was in a position to do more expeditiousiy and economically than, the Government could.
