AN INFANT'S DEATH.

At the Police Court to-day, Walter Charles Hooper was charged with having on January sth made a false statement concerning the death of an illegitimate child. The police said that the accused and his wife took the child and received £30. It was alleged that the accused wilfully evaded the law. The child had since died, and tho Registrar said that there was a- discrepancy between the eniry regarding the child's birth and that' regarding its death. The accused reserved Ins defence, and was committed for trial. On a further charge of having, in consideration of a payment of £30, retained an infant without being licensed. Hooper and his wife were convicted and ordered to be sentenced after the Supreme Court case had been disposed of.
