Official.—Bluejackets seized Jaluit unopposed, and captured the fortifications, arms, and ammunition. They released the British ships in port.

The Navy Department explains that the occupation is for military purposes, and will not be permanent.

Jaluit is the principal town of the Marshall Islands, a group in the Western Pacific, annexed by Germany ..in 1885. It consists, of two parallel chains of low-lying coral reefs, the Ratak and Ralik groups. The population- numbers 13,600.
