STOKE POST OFFICE.

MEETING OF RESIDENTS,

About fifty residents attended a meeting held at Stoke last night-to consider matters affecting the local post office. The chair was occupied by Mr A. P. Allport, who explained the object of the meeting.

It appeared from a letter received from Mr W. T. Ward, Chief Postmaster, Nelson, that the Government, on account of the war, was holding ovor tho'-erection of new post office buildiugs throughout the Dominion, including that for Stoke. It was in consequence of this that arrangements were .being made to have the post office* at Mr Pill's store. ._ , A great deal of discussion tcolc place, and, on a show of" hands, a resolution similar to. that passed by the Progressive Association last wo'ek was carried, as under: —"That this meeting pi residents emphatically protests against the proposal of the Government Postal Department to transfer the post office to Mr Pill's store, and considers the combining of the postal and money order office with a general store inimical to the interests of residents and probably also to tho Postal Department. This meeting further respectfully suggests that if it is found necessary by the Postal Department to erect temporary premises such building as may be amalgamated with the proposed permanent office be erected on the permanent site. " That this protest be wired to the Premier at once." It was resolved that the Chief Postmaster be asked to hold over the carrying out of the alterations in Mr Pill's store until a reply is received from the Government with regard to the residents' protest.
