NEW ZEALAND'S PART.

VNEWS FROM THE FRONT,

PERIOD OF SILENCE NECESSARY

IMPERIAL COMMUNICATION TO GOVERNMENT.

(Special to "The Colonist.")

Wellington, Oct. 5. *Rom an answer .given to Mr Russell by the Prime Minister in the House of Representatives to-night, it is-evident that, however avid people may be for news of the progress that is being made by the Allies ngainst the German foe, patience must he exercised, at the least for a few days-. The, member for Avon asked if it were true that an important cable dealing with the war had been received that afternoon by the; Prime Minister. The cable- contained no serious news, answered the Prime Minister. The information it contained for the Government was that there would be .practically no news from the front for some little time to come.

Mr Russell asked if that affected the publication of news.

The Prime Minister replied:"! think it does." Mr Massey went on to- say that he was communicating with the editors of newspapers on the subject. He could not reveal the whole of'the cablegram, part of which was confidential, but lie could say that some very important movements were in progress, and owing either to previous news leaking out that ought not to have leaked out. or to the express desire of the authorities to prevent certain news from leaking but, it had been considered wise to adopt ,the course indicated as a precautionary measure. The communication, of course, referred to the whole Empire, and not merely to New Zealand.
