FALL FROM A HORSE.
ARTILLERYMAN FATALLY INJURED. (From "Tho Colonist," Feb. 24.) Guuner Peter Harvey, attached to 1 the Permanent Artillery at Nelson, sustained fatal injuries j-osterday morning through being thrown from,a horse. In company- with two drivers, Gunner Harvey was returning to, the barracks ...in'"'.-, Washington Valley, .and .was riding the horse "Percussion"," noted as an ugly customer.. After crossing the railway line in Totara street the animal became restive, and was with difficulty kept under control by its rider. On reaching the junction of the roads at Washington Valley Gunner Harvey apparently attempted to get the animal to turn in the direction of the stables, but the horse evidently tried to go in the opposite direction, with" the result that it fell, and Gunner Harvey was thrown heavily to the ground. First "aid was rendered by the artillerymen accompanying Gunner Harvey, and assistance was given by residents of the locality and the railwaymen. Medical aid was summoned, and Gunner Harvey's injuries were of such a character that his removal to the hospital was at once ordered. The unfortunate young lran was in an unconscious .condition; and, was suffering from injuries to the Tiead, face, shoulders, and hip . . _■; ■At the hospital it was found that Gunner Harvey had' sustained a fracture' of the base of the skull, and from the first little hope of his. recovery was held out. He lingered in an unconscious condition throughout yesterday, death supervening at 11.30 o'clock last night. Gunner Harvey had been married only a short time.
