SEQUEL TO CUSTOMS FRAUDS.

FIRM SUED FOR DUTY

Two writs, one for*a large amount, and the other for a smaller sum, haw boon issued at the instigation of the Customs Department, against Messrs Barlow Bros., well-known merchants in ChristchuTch, who up to a little whilo ago had -a large wholesale business in tobacco and general smoking utensils. The writs have been issued to claira duty which the Department alleges hay not been paid through the action- of a« employee of the firm who, it is allegoq, was mixed up in the Customs huude. The employee has left the city, but the Department lias taken the stand thai tho firm is liable for the amount involved, although it knew nothing of tho depredations.
