PERSONAL.

The Hon. W. F. Massey, Prime Minister, with Mrs. Massey i Miss Massey, and Messrs. Thompson and Furby, private secretaries, left Nelson yesterday for the West Coast in continuation of their tour of the South Island. Mr. W. W. Snodgrase, president of the Chamber of Commerce, accompanied the Prime Minister as far as Murchison. The party travelled by train to Glenhope, and then motored to Murchison. Unfortunately steady rain set in early in the morning, and the weather conditions during the journey would be anything but pleasant.

Miss Muriel Starr arrived last evening by train from Glenhope, having come over by special motor from Westport, accompanied by Miss Mary Worth, Miss Sylvia, Bremer and Mr. E. W. Morrison.

A Wellington Press Association telep.ram says that Mr Pointon. gaoler, at Lyttelton, has retired, and will be succeeded by Mr J. O. Scanlon, gaoler at Wellington. Chief Warder Crooke of Auckland, Avill act temporarily as gaoler at Wellington. v

Mr. N. D. Heley, of the local staff of Messrs Sargood, Son, and Ewen, who lias been transferred to the- Auckland branch as senior traveller for the New Plymouth district, was met by his fellow-members of the staff last evening, aud presented with a smoker's companion, while from outside friends he was tho recipient of other handsome presentations.

The members of the Richmond Fire Brigade entertained Captain Wilkes at a social held in the brigade hall last week on tho eve of his departure on a holiday trip to England and the Continent. Opportunity was takeu of the occasion to preseriF Captain Wilkes with a very handsome travelling rug. After a very enjoyable time had been spent all hands wished Captain Wilkes a very pleasant trip and a safe return to ag'uia take charge of the gade.' The singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
