TWO ISLANDS SWAMPED

\ Auckland, March 5. A hurricane swept Shell Island and caused mountainous seas which swamped Rakaranga and Manahiks. The natives were compelled to take to tV eir boats until the storm subsided. Considerable damage was done to crops. The islands lie very low and v-ere completely submerged. Aitutake Island was in the tiack of the storm, but sustained less damage. The storm arose suddenly. After pas^sing over the Shell group it spent itself on the Cook islands. A dismasted schooner, known to have been in the vicinity of the hurricane, has not since been reported.
