MUSICAL AND ELOCUTIONARY COMPETITIONS. Them was standing room only at tlu> School of Music last evening when the musical and elocutionary competitioßs in connection with the Nelson Band of ttope Union were commenced. The Hgv; J. H. MacKenzie presided. . The Mayor .(Mr W. Isock) in declaring the competitions formally opened expressed his pleasure at seeing suc)i. a large attendance, which was an evidence of the interest that was being taken m the welfare of the young of tins,city. For many years past he (tli.» speaker) had recognised the good workthat Band of Hope Unions were doing, and he appreciated the way they wero dealing with the liquor problem, viz.,, educating the children on the principle that prevention ■ was better than euro. He complimented the. promoters on the large number of entries received and,' the general interest taken by the competitors. He had been informed tbufc the entries received were more thaft half the number received at Christ— church. These contests, said the Mayor, were of great value educationally, and were productive of, much good m developing the intellect and bringing out the latent talents of those who tcok part. The contests comprised vocal and instrumental music,-reading, reciting and speeches. Out of 49 competitors at the preliminary competition held on Saturday, 30 were unable t« qualify, but these must not bo downhearted,,as all could, not be successful. He urged those who had been unsnooossful to persevere and they would no doubt win in the end. (Applause.) Ho then declared tho competitions open. A lengthy programme of over forty items was submitted,' but it was d» cided that no public announcement of tho result would be made until this evening, when the competitions will be continued. Some of tho items were well rendered, and the impromptu speeches were not the least interesting feature. The subject given was "The Fun ar.d Folly of Wine at a Wedding Feast," and while some of the speakers sjoke fluently and well, the efforts of others caused amusement. Some of the entrants, after receiving their subject do, clined to face the audience. Those wbotook part last evening were:— Pianoforte solo: Miss P. Israel, Mis* G. Neale. Recitation: Rhoda Batcbclor, Keith Knapp, Edna Lang, Cedric Torriss, Sylvia Bastin, Charley Gaynor, Minnie G-reig, Sheila Chappell. Vocal solo (under 10 years): Cedrie Ferriss.
