Sir George Reid, who has been indisposed, is better, but ho is still confined to his room.

Mr. E. J. Scantlebury, of Reefton, left for Wellington by the Awaroa last evening for Wellington, to attend the Fire Brigades' Conference, which takes place at Wanganui next week.

Mr. T. A.. Coghlan, Agent-General for New South Wales, presided at the Agents-General farewell luncheon to Sir J. W. Taverner, late Agent-General for Victoria, says a London cable.

Dr. W. F. Adeny, chairman of the Congregational Union, will shortly visit Australasia, saye a London cable.

Tho news of tho death of Mrs, Nicholson, wife of Mr. J. H. Nicholson, which occurred yesterday after a somewhat protracted, illness, will be received with deep regret by her many friends in the city. For several years Mrs. Nicholson had been connected with the staff of th» Girls' College as teacher of elocution, and 'she was also well known as a priyate teacher of that subject. General sympathy will be felt with her family in their bereavement.
