The boy burglar Banbury, recently sentenced, again attempted '■ to^ escape from custody by tampering with the prison-'-window yesterday morning &aye an Auckland telegram. On appearing subsequently in the Magistrate's Court Banbury was warned by the Magistrate.

A meeting has been convened to take place in the Chamber of Commerce rooms this evening to consider the plans for proposed swdmming baths prepared by the city engineer, and to take* fur-, ther action in the matter of securing baths for this city. Mr. A. T. Maginnity, president of the Nelson Swimming Club, will preside, and he hopes to 6ee a large attendance', as the matter is one of considerable moment to tho Nelson public. f

The Nelson Fire Brigade will be represented at the fire brigade demonstration to be held at Wanganui next week. The team consists of Foreman K. Stewart (coach), and Firemen W. and H. Bennett, Watson, L. Brown, and W. Jack. The members of the team have been practising hard, and it is considered to bo the strongest that has ever left Nelson. Several, event's, both wet and dry, will be taken part in,'and .the Nelson representatives should give a good account of themselves. The Motueka Brigade will be represented in the manual events by tho following team : — .tJhappajm,. Coppins, Talbot, Taylor, Simpson,' Goodman, and Schwass. Secretary E. Boyes, of the Nelson Brigade, a. past president of the Fire Brigades' ■Association' of New. Zealand, will represent the Nelson Brigade at the confer-ence-of that body. It is expected that over 700 firemen will be competing, and the people of Wanganui are reported to be making great preparations for thereception of their visitors.

Twelve defaulters under tho.Defence Act were given time to make up deficient parades and six.others were fined,, says a Press Association report of the Timaru Magistrate's Court proceedings yesterday.

A. meeting of clergymen was held yesterday afternoon to consider the matter of a united memorial service in connection with tho loss of Captain Scott and his party, and it was resolved that such a service should be held this evening. It was resolved that there should not be any chairman or president, and no announcement of any part of the service will be- made. Copies of the order of service and the three hymns to be sung will be placed in the hands of each worshipper, whoso attention is directed to the note preceding the order of service, which makes the procedure perfectly clear. Those taking part in the service will be'the Bishop of Nelson, Bishop Mules, Revs. J. P. Kempthorno and W. S. Lucas (Anglican), Rev. J. H. MacKenzio (Presbyterian), Rev. W. E. Lambert (Baptist), Mr. Mou'rant (Methodist), and Mr. G. D. Verco (Church of Christ). The service will commence at 8 o'clock, and members of tho various church choirs arc requested to attend at 7.45 to take position together on the platform. For the convenience of those who intend to be present we reprint tho note to worshippers which will appear at the head of tho order of service, as follows:—(1) No announcement of any part of the service- will be made. (2) The organist wall.play the tune of each hymn before it is §ung. (3) Worshippers are requested to stand while the prayers are being offered. (4) WorBhippers are earnestly requested not to make any demonstration of approval^ etc., during the service. The hymns selected are "0 God, our help in ages past," ''Rock of Ages," and "Abide with Me." As there will be some expenses to meet in connection with the service, collection plates will be placed at the doors, and any surplus will be devoted to the relief fund. The Mayor and City Councillors will be present officially, and pupils of the two Colleges will attend in a body. The service will be held an the School of Music.
