BIG RAILWAY APPOINTMENT

Wellington, Feb. 12.. The important position of chief mechanical engineer to the New Zealand railways is to be filled, I hear on reliable authority, by Mr. H. H. Jackson, at present locomotive engineer in charge of the Addington works, and of the locomotive works generally on tho Hurunui-Bluff section. Mr. Bcattie, tho present engineer;, will retire on March 31st. His successor's salary will be £800, rising to a maximum of £900 ;par annum. Mr. Jackson has, during his 36 years' of service "on, the/New- Zealand railways, filled positions in every important centre, and is said to be''popular in.the service, being a strict.disciplinarian, but having a thoroughly practical knowledge which.enables him to control in a fail; and sympathetic manner.
