She emigrated to New Zealand with her husband, the late Mr. George Bampton, in tho ship Bombay, arriving at Nelson in 1842, so that deceased was among the first white women in this district. After three years residence she left New Zealand with her husband, in the brig Palmyra, for South Australia, and she resided in Port Adelaide up till.; tho time of her death. During the time they were in New Zealand Mr Bampton was employed by tli o Government on a survey party under Capt. Wakefield, and ho was, one of tho few survivors "'of the* Wairau massacre. It took the late Mr Bampton a fortnight.to return to Nelson after the massacre, and ho was compelled to travel at night and rest in the •daytime for fear of the Natives. During that period tho deceased's whole sustenance was one turnip, and on his arrival homij he waa so weak and ill that lie \vps sent .to• tho. Hospital. In spito of tliotfo privations tho late Mr Bampton lived to the ripe old age of 78 years. The late Mrs. Barnpton left • three sonr. and one d-inpihior: Mr George Bampton, of Port Adelaide; Mr. Robert Bamnton. of Alborton; Mr. Thomns Bampton. of Port Wakefield; and Mrs. E. Dickson, Hawthorn ; bosides. 42 errand children, and 41 fjreat grandchildren.
