WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY.

GIRDLING THE EMPIRE

f United Press Association. \

Wellington, May 9. The acceptance by the Imperial Post-master-General, acting on behalf of His Majesty's Government and the Governments of the Dominions of tho terms submitted by the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company, Ltd., for the construction of all long distance wireless stations may be required for the Imperial wireless scheme, marks the first step towards the establishment of a girdle of wireless stations round the Empire. Such a scheme has vast far reaching potentialities, and has been advocated for i number .of-years. It was not until last year, when the Colonial Premiers and Mr Herbert Samuel acclaimed the practicability of such a scheme before the Imperial Conference that a decisive step was decided upon. The result of this is now evident in the decision of the governments concerned, to proceed with the construction of the following stations forthwith, London, Egypt Aden, Bangalore (India), Pretoria (South Africa), and Singapore. The stations will bo operated by the Marconi Company for and on account of the Imperial Government for the first six months, and thereafter by the Government. The company is to receive a payment of £60,000 for each station exclusive of the. site, buildings and foundations, and machinery. It is further provided that the company shall receive 10 per cent of the gross receipts of the long distance stations for 28 years.
