GATHERING OF SHIPPING MEN.

Mr. Alfred Hawley, who has been closely associated with tho shipping business of Nelson for many years, am who has recently severed his oorrtectior with the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Company for the purpose of settling ir Wanganui, where hc^ has secured ar appointment, was farowelled by a largi gathering of friends at the Port on Sat urday afternoon. j

Mr. William 'Rogers, the manager o the Anchor Company, was cai'od upoi to address the meeting and to presen Mr. Hawley with a purse of gold, anafter referring to the general good fee'] ing that has always axisted between M Hawley and those with whom he came i contact in shipping business, said tha during the many years Mr. Hawley ha been in the employ of the Anchor Com pany he had always been the right ma in the right place, and the fact thai many of the subscribers to the purs were men who had been in the samo employ and directly under his supervision was a proof that whilst ho had given unqualified satisfaction to his employers he had the good wishes of those who worked under his direction. The speaker asked Mr. Hawley to accept the purse and accompanying letters as an indication of tho esteem in which he was held by his 00-workera and friends, who i wished him good luck and many happy I years in his new sphere. i Three cheers were then givon for Mr Hawley and after sp<*oches by several other gentlemen, refreshments w<ro handed round, and the health of the guest of the maeting was enthusiastically drunk with musical honour.

Mr. Hawley in returning thanks, stated that it was with feelings of genuine regret that he was leaving Nelson, and that he would always keep in mevnory the many good friends he had made there. Although the purse was a valuable gift he thought more of the assurance of good feeling expressed in the accompanying letter.

Cheers were again given for Mr. Hawley and also for the chairman and after a social chat the gathering broko up. We understand that Mr. Hawloy, with his family, is leaving Nelson for Wanganui this week.

Mr. T. Shone, who has been connected with the staff of Messrs. C. Begg and Co., Ltd., since the branch was opened in Nalson, has been transferred to tho Wellington house of the firm. On Monday evening Mr. Shono was presented with a case- of silver mounted military brushes by Mr. Desgranges, on-b?half of'the local staff, as a mark of their esteem. Mr. Shono leaves for Wellington this morning.

Prior to his departure for Christchurch,.Mr. J. F. Hardey was the. .recipient, fr6m the members of the Nelson Jockey Club and Nelson Trotting Club of a handsome gold -albert, as a slight recognition of the services ha had rendered those bodies. The presentation was-made by Mr. E. E. Trask (president of the Nelson Jockey Club) and Mr H. Baigent (president of the Nelson Trotting dub). Mr. Hardey was vice-presi-dent of the Nelson Trotting Club, and a member of the committee of the Nelson Jockey Club. During his residency in Nelson, Mr. Hardey took a- very ket>/ interest in racing, particularly trottinc, and anything that was for the advancement of the sport had hia cordial y^upport. iSubsequently Mr. Haydey's. health was drank with enthusiasm, atvtt ho was wished every success in thel future.
