THE WHALING INDUSTRY.

[United Press Association.]

snveroargiit, May 8

During the past few months a great deui mis beun taid and written 01 the intentions of Norwegian ..whaling companies to exploit southern waters, and critics have endeavoured to create an impression that no such enterprise was over likely to be floated.

Following on an interview which a "Southland Times',' representative- had with Mr. Wiig, Nowegian sub-Consul at the Bluff, a few months back, intimation was conveyed to the outside public to the effect that arrangements, which had then been announced, were no idle boast. As a matter of fact there was, at that time, lying at Hobart, the fourma'Sted barque Mirrnosa, which contained boilng-down and manure-manufactur-ing plant. It waft the Mirmosa's intentions to carry outTwhaling operations in Tasmanian waters, and then New Zealand's southerly spas were to be exploited. Tli© Mirmosa, which is owned by Messrs. Dannevig and Co., of Harvick, Norway, has now completed her work on the Tssmanian shores, and, in accordance with the previously announced intentions, set out for New Zealand on Sunday. She. has arrived at Stewart Island, and is at present lying at anchor in the vicinity of Patterson's Inlet. .

Tho Mirmosa is accompanied by a small tender steamer. Owing to their inaccessibility it is at present difficult to get any reliable information as to the exact movements of the whaling party. The steamer is, however, expected to arrive at the Bluff to-day for coal supplies for the ■'work- to be carried on in "the. southern latitudes. It has been announced that the New Zealand Whaling Company which has chartered the Rakawia and Prince George (both of which should reach New Zealand shortly) intends to confine its operations, to northern waters, as it is considered too late to go south this season.

A wife told a Tottenham magistrate, lrfst month that she, her husband, and five children slept in ono bed.

There are still some things they do bettor in Germany. A self-styled prophet named Voigt, who has written a pamphlet predicting the end of tho world for March 21st, has been fined by tho Berlin police for spreading pernicious literature.

A burglar who broke into a hours in Paris and carried off £800 in cash and £2400 in securities, finding that the hitter wero useless to him, returned them in a registered letter to tho owner, with a box of flowers for his wife, and apologies for tho emotion he may have caused.
