SADLER COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.

ON TWO SERIOUS-CHARGES

Christchurohj May 8. Walter Richard Sadler, who figured in what is known as the Cashel street mystery, was before the Court this morning, charged with,having performed an illegal operation ■at Jyaiapoi on Harriot May Jveatley on April Bth, and a similar operation on tho same girl at Wellington in April 26th. The case is attracting a great deal of attention locally.

The girl Keatley went into the witness box and. related the circumstances of the first operation, which was arranged with Sadler by John Wilson. She was 19 years old.

Wilson gave evidence that Keatley was living in •Christchurch when he learnt that she was pregnant. He took her to heir home in Kaiapoi and discussed the question of marriage. They decided that she would not marry for two or three years. They then discussed the question of an illegal operation, a.nd lie wrote to Sadler (who was then in Wellington) on tho .subject. Sadler replied by telegram, "Wire £10." He had wired £2 and then £5. Sadler camo down on Easter Monday and took Keatley to witness's place, whore the operation was unsuccessful. Subsequently he arranged for the girl to go toWellington. ,

. Evidence was given concerning the /telegrams and money orders.

Later,

Sadler was committed for trial on both charges. He reserved his defence. Bail was fixed, himself in £200, and one surety of £200, in each case.
