A serious slump is being experienced in tho sawmilling industry (says a •JJokilika correspondent), and quite a large number of mills in the district have boon compelled to close down. Some of tho mills have been working with half tho usual staff, but thoy have had porforc-r to further reduce the number of hands employed. Various reasons aro assigned for the slump, but the chiof appears to be tho lack of orders for red-pine timber. The mills which aro fortunate enough to have white pin..?, bush to work, are doing vroll, as plonty of orders aro forthcoming, but tho local mills are not so ■ favourably situated, and tho big ehortening of hands must have an effect upon the business of tho town.-
