An Invercargill telegram states that the Hon. J. A. _ Hanan arrived there last night and will attend the banquet to be tendered to Mr. J. O. Thorn-* son at Otautau to-night.

A Timaru Press mes-sage states that a. social is to be given to the Hon. T. Buxton on Friday evening at Fairlio, by his constituents in that district. The Premier is to be present.

Forty years ago Mr. F. Hanson was well known to Dunedin compositors R-S printer of the "Otago Daily Times." He held that position from 1864 to 1875. He died at Dunedin on May 2nd. Men who worked under him say that ho was a good workman and fair.

News has been received of tho death of Mr. Joseph Edward Nathan, who was the head of the well known Wellington firm of Joseph Nathan and Co. Deceased was one of the.starters of the Wellington Harbour Board, the, chief promoter of the Wellington and Manawatu railway, a director of tho Wellington Patent Slip and Gas Companies. Ho was 77 years of age, and has been living in London for some years.
