AUCKLAND WATERSIDE WORKERS.

CHARGED WITH AIDING A STRIKE

The Department of Labour proceedod against the Waterside Workers' Union on a charge of aiding a strike by some of its members, employed by Nearing and Co. as stevedores to . unload the Paparoa on November 21 st. The Inspector of Awards said that Nearing and Co wore parties to an award-on November 14th. The firm engaged a numbor of men to discharge the Paparoa. The men worked until the 18th, and then the company received a letter from the Waterside Workers' Union demanding Is 6d an hour ordinary and 2ft 6d overtime. On the 20th the men employed informed the Nearing's representative that the unloading of superphosphates was worth Is 6d an hour. Nearings refused and a meeting of tho men passed a resolution insisting on increased- wages. On November 22nd they did not start work, and so as not to delay the ship the company was forced to pay Is 6d.
