A London cable announces the death of Mr Henry Varley, the evangelist. Mr J. McHarg, who has been dredgev master to the Nelson Harbour Board for the past' 8J years, is leaving for Scotland in about a fortnight's time. Mr. W. T. Hildreth has been appointed by the Government to represent it on the Wellington Harbour Board. vice Mr. H. C. Tewsley, resigned. A p'.oasiug function took place yesterday morning when a largo number of members of the Nelson Club assembled to say good-bye to Mr. E. J. Allen, manager of the Bank of Now Zealand. Mr. Allen and his wife leave Nolson on Thursday morning on. a nine months' holiday, and propose- visiting England I and the Continent. Mr. W. Rout" presided and proposed tho health of Mr. and Mrs. Al'on, and expressed the wish I that the holiday would be> a very pleasant one, and that Mr. and Mrs. Allen would return to Nelson in the best of health, wlion their numerous friends would be happy to welcome them home again. Mr Allen returned thanks to these present for their kindly farewell, and a very pleasant half-hour was spent. The occasion .was taken advantage of to give a welcome to Mr. Dignan, who relieves Mr. Allen during the time the latter is away. The Rev. W. Baumber, who leaves Timaru shortly for Nelson, was tho guest of a. farewell gathering of the Woslej'an congregation thorn last evening (says a Press Association telegram) and was presented with a purse of sovereigns. There were- many expressions of regret that the- minister's health made a, change desirable.

A farewell social will be tendered to the Rev. J. J. Low is, Mrs. LbwM( arid family by the congregation of St. Johns' Methodist Church in the school room to-morrow evening at 8 p.m. The RevMr. Lewis, who has ministered in Nelson for the last three j'ears, leaves next Tuesday _ for Petonoto tako charge of that parish.
