OPENING OF THE WAKEFIELD

GREEN

On Saturday afternoon Wakefield added its quota in increasing the number of bowling clubs in the district, when it opened its green. The Club has a membership of 30. The weather was everything to be desired and the Nelson, Maitai, Takaka and Motueka Clubs sent representatives to give the youngest member a good start; In addition to these, visitors were present representing Wellington. Palmerston North and Petone Clubs.

The groan, which played well, is situated close to the township on the western side of the railway station and in course of time promises to be an excellent one. Only a few months back the ground was in a rough, uncultivated condition but thanks to the energies of Mr. A. Day, in whoso hands the forming of the green was placed, it now presents a very pleasing appearance, and will continue to improve. Besides the bowlers there was a good attendance of local residents, including many ladies. Mr. Jas. Bruce, president of the Club, in a few appropriate remarks welcomed tho visitors and gave an interesting 'account of the formation of the Club, especially mentioning Messrs. Worth. Longton, Bujlard, Harris. Johnson and others, who had done yoeman service in bringing the Club to light. Mrs G. H. Johnson threw the first "jack." Mr. Bruco then declared the green open, and seven full rink i games were made up, the teams and scores being as follows: —

Tront, Wallace, Whelan, de Castro (s) 16; Laird, Etheridge, Wratt, H. Baigent (s) 13.

Refreshments were liberally provided and dispensed by the ladies of Wakefield, and at the conc'.usion of the day Messrs. H. Baigent (Nelson) and A. Sinclair (Motueka) on behalf of the visitors tendered thanks for the hospitality shown, and cluhm-s wore accorded tlie Wakefield Club and the ladies.

Arrangements are being mado to send two or three rinks to Wakefield on Wednesday afternoon, the weekh half-holiday.
