OBITUARY.

WILLIAM HADDOW, J.P.

Last night death removed a well known citizen of Nelson for the last forty-eight years in the person of Mr William Haddow. Deceased was born in Scotland in 1831, and came here from Australia in 1863. He entered into partnership with the late Mr Neale, and for many years the firm carried on the business of produce merchants in Collingwood street, and afterwards removed to more extensive premises near the railway station in Vanguard street. Mr Haddow always took a keen interest in local and general affairs. He sat for some time in the City Council, and was an active member of the Inland Communication. League, a body which did much to try and push on railway communication in tliis district, Repeatedly lie was reelected as a director of tho Nelson Permanent Building Society. He a few days ago notified to his fellow directors that he intended to retire, and would not seek re-election. He was instrumental in starting tho Nelson Artisans' Association, which did a largo amount of good in preparing young men to take up the duties of citizenship. Many of tho members of the latter Association afterwards filled important positions in Nelson, and other parts of the Dominion. For years, and up to the time of his doath, deceased performed the duties of a Justice of the Peace. Ho was a member of the Trust Board of St John's Methodist Church. Deceased leaves a widow and two married daughters. The oldest daughter istf married to Mr. Pettit, our present Mayor, and tho younger daughter is married to Mr A. E. Hounbell, of Stoke. Tho bereaved ones will receive the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The funeral takes place on Saturday after* noon.

April 23, The funeral of the late Mr. William Haddow took place on Saturday afternoon. There was a considerable number of followers, and many were prevented attending by tho heavy ra-in. Among those who attended were members of tho City Council (the Mayor, son-in-law, being ono of the chief mourners), town clerk, office bearers of St. John's Methodist Church, directors and secretary of tho Permanent Building Society, and friends from town and country. A portion of the burial service was held in St. John's Church, the Roy. J .J. Lewis oonducting tho service, the Rev. Mr. Lamborfc assisting. A memorial service will foo he'd at St. John's next Sunday evening.

The death occurred early yesterday morning of Mrs Craig, wife of Mr Ernest Craig, after a brief illness. On tho previous evening deceased was attacked by violent pains in the head and was medically attended, but death enHied a few hours later. Mr and Mrs Oraig resided in Nelson some years ago, and had only returned here a few weeks ago.

The funeral of Mr. H. B. i'crrin took place yesterday. Deceased, who .vas born in Nelson, was a member of i well known family. For 20 years he ivas with the D.1.C., and for a time was with Messrs E. Bnxton and Co., Ltd., and Messrs G. Page and Sons, of Nelson. Ho leaves a widow and five children, who will have the sincere sympathy of many in this district, deceased having been well and favourib'.y known.
