THE PUBLIC HOLIDAYS ACT.

There briug some doubt in the mind, of many business pqople as to whetho the Public Holidays Act recently passed would come into operation befonChristmas, Mr H. Broadhead, secretary of the Canterbury Employers' Association, wrote last week to tinMinister "of Labour on the. subject, ant yesterday received the following te\vgram in reply :- "Regret that your let ter of the 6th inst was overlooked. Tin Public Holidays Act came into forc< on bcu'ng assented to by his Excellent [the Governor. The first holidays tr be affected by the new statute, will be Christmas Day, and Ist January next. It is enacted that wherever these days are provided for as. holidays iii any Act, or in any award or industrial agreement, and they happen to fall on on a Sunday, they must be observed on the following day (Monday)."
