Owing to xne scarcity of fish in Hawke's Bay, Mr N. Fernandos, of Wellington, has decided to send hissteam trawler Phantom from Napier to tho mouth of the Wairau river, where it is hoped she will find profitable employment for some timo to come. Mr Fernandos says that he lias never known fish so scarce in Wellington waters. js-cj «j ;■; : tn LCiit^rsEiss It is stated that Halley's comet is creating a panic in Kieff. In widelycirculated leaflets the comet is doscribed as "the sign of God's scourge and the liarbinger -of universal war and famine, if not of the end of the world." Taking advantage of the ignorance and superstition of tha people, unscrupulous persons are collecting largo sums of money for supplicatory Masses and special prayers in all the churches and monasteries of the "Ukraine Mecca" fo .rthe "rescue of Holy Russia from destruction by the falling comet." It is noteworthy that these subscription lists include the names of many prominent members of various learned professions.

A preliminary meeting of citizens was held yesterday afternoon to consider tlie question of taking steps to perpetuate the memory of the late Mr F. Trask, M.L.C... by the erection of a permanent memorial. Mr C- i. Fell was voted to the chair. After some discussion it was unanimously resolved that a deputation consisting of Messrs C. Y. Fell, 0. W.- Hanby, and J. King, wait upon the Mayor this morning, and ask him to convene a public nieoting of citizens to further the object.. Messrs W. W. Snodgrass and J. King were asked to act as joint secretaries. Reference was made by several speakers to tha splendid service that the late Mr Trask had rendered the city during, his lifetime, and it was confidently anticipated that the proposal to erect a memorial would bo enthusiastically taken up!

Mrs E. Orr, of River Terrace, accompanied by her daughter, aged about 14 and a friend, were returning home from a drive to Foxhill (writes pur correspondent), and when descending the approach of the Foxhill cart bridge, the horse fell, witli the result that all the occupants of the trap were thrown out. All sustained br.cl. bruises and a shaking, especially JVliss Orr, she having . bfjen thrown right over the horse's hea<l, her injuries being much more serious, but their extent our correspondent was unable to ascertain. The shafts of tho. trap were broken off, and the horse- was considerably cut about. Help was soon, available, and the occupants of tho trap were removed to Mr W. Wadsworth's house, where their injuries ware attended to by Dr Hugh Pearless.

A meeting of those interested iai the reopening of the Wai-iti Literary and Debating Society for the session of 1910, was held in the State school room on Monday evening, . and there was a fairly representative attendance. Mr E. Edridge was voted to the chair. In his opening remarks the chairman mentioned the wact that the, society had already passed through six sessions, a fact which was considered somewhat remarkable, as the life of such societies was. generally not more of two or three years. On the question being put it was unanimously decided to open the session on May sth, and to meet every week thereafter until about the end. of August. A syllabus comprising a variety of entertaining and useful subjects, including debates on questions of present day interest, was drawn up and adopted. The officers for the session are as follows: — President, Mr E. Edridge; vice-president), Mr I. Tunniclifte; secretary and treasurer, Miss Lammas ; assistant secretary, Miss Hoult; committee, Messrs E. S. Hoult, Louis Hoult. R. G. Tunnlcliffe, G. Mead, and T. Cropp.
