WAIOpiEELDXr (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Wakefitild Literary and Debating Society was held on Wednesday evening, Mr F. B. Peart occupying the chair, Avhen the following officers were elected: — President, Mr E. Hodgson; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs G. Wilkins and G. Robertson; secretary, Mr A. N. Longton, assistant secretary, Miss Hewlett; committee, Mesdames Hooper, Hodgspn, Wilkens and Blommart Miss Robertson, Messrs Hunt, Peart, Bird. White and Harris. It was decided that the Society open the session on Thursday, the 12th May, Thursday being the evening selected for the meetings of the Society. There is every prospect of a very successful session for the Society, many new members having joined. Friends generally will be pleased to know that Mr Alex Robertson, who met with a serious accident to his eye, is not 'likely to lose the sight as was at first feared, . the specialists in Wellington being hopeful of preserving it. ; The people of Wakefield areanxioiisly enquiring the purpose for which an addition was made to the State school, the infant children are Still' doing a ifreeze, especially during this present cold snap, whilst the school committee, Education Board, contractor, and architect are waxing warm over some technicality in -connection with the construction of the new room. Surely some arrangement can be come to, to put matters on a satisfactory footing and allow the room to be used without further delay. The Tennis Club are holding tlieir closing dance next Friday evening, when every endeavour will be made to make this one of the most successful dances of the year. The tennis courts will be closed the following day. There is a strong current of feeling 'throughout the district towards resuscitating the brass band here. The material! available for the formation of a really capital band is very. good, and if Mr E. J. Painton will only lend his assistance towards this laudable object there is no reason why the^ matter should not reach a successful issue.
