THE LATE HON. F. TRASK.

MOTION OF CONDOLENCE BY THE CITY COUNCIL. At the meeting of the City Council last night, the Mayor, before >he ordinary business, was proceeded with, referred to the death of the Hon. !<'. Trask. Mr Piper said Mr Trask had been Mayu^ of the city for nine years, during which time the speaker had been in almost daily toucli with him, and knew his worth and work. Mr Trask's first municipal- work was in connection with the Queen's Gardens, but his greatest work was the initiation of, the Rocks road scheme, which had been a great benefit . to the city and the Waimea district. In regard to the Queen's Gardens, Mr Trask's efforts were ably seconded by Mrs Trask, who presented trees and raised funds for other improvements. It was through the instrumentality of Mr Trask that the Sands Reserve Avas acquired for the city, With all the increments, for. the. sum of £300. The increment now amounted to 150 acres, and with the continued recession of the sea would make a valuable estate for the future. These were a few of. the works in which Mr Trask took a prominent part, and it should, be re-; membered that during the whole of his term of office there was a falling revenue. It was with great sorrow he moved "That this Council sincerely regrets the death of the Hon. Francis Trask, who was for, nine years Mayor of this city, as a greaj; loss to the town arid district in which he lived; and that this resolution be recorded in the minutes, and a copy of it be forwarded to Mrs Trask." Cr Turner seconded the resolution. Cr Grace said the city would miss Mr Trask exceedingly. His personality had pervaded Nelson for many years, and his characteristics had. endeared him to the whole town. Those characteristics, kindliness of feeling, generosity, and charity might be copied with advantage by every citizen. The resolution was then put and carried, and the Council adjourned for a quarter of an hour out of- respect to Mr Trask's memory .-
