Tlie New Zealand team continued , their first innings in line weather, Lusk and Reese, the not out men, • facing the bowling of Whitty and Fac- • ey. The play was fearfully slow, and uninteresting. The first twenty minutes' play produced only five runs. None of the New Zealand batsmen, with tho exception of Reese, appeared to have much confidence in themselves. Reese's innings was a very lucky one, he being dropped on two occasions behind the wickets. Sims' innings was a patchy one, and he had a life in the slips half jvay through: The. last four ' batsmen added 17 runs to tho score. ; Tlio Australians' bowling was good, eacli bowler having a good-Jength and placing the field well, so that no runs • were wasted. Facey; who did extremely well with the ball, was unlucky in having, two chances dropped off his bowling. Tlie Australians in their second innings showed-that runs could be got'under practicalls' any circumstances, providing the batsmen understood each other's play. Their running between the wickets' was' a revelation to the local batsmen. Bardsley and Mayno's partnership produced 160 runs for tho, first wicket. It was a good exhibition of crisp and clean driving, and neat cutting. Bath batsmen's innings were practically chanceless, and all the availablo bowling talent was brought against them but all efforts to shift tlio batsmen proved futile, until Bennett took his third change. With tho wind his first ball proved fatal to the crack Sydney man, Bdxshall taking a nice catch' behind the wickets. The batsmen had been scoring at thb rate of two runs per mmute.
