TECHNICAL EDUCATION.
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The Technical Committee, consisting of Messrs Smith (who was appointed* chairman for the meeting), Fair and liouke, which met on Monday, presented the following report at yesterday's meeting of the Education Board: — • The monthly report of the Director of Technical Schools was read. Arising out of the report it was resolved that a vote of thanks be accorded to Messrs McGce and Scholtz for donations to the Technical School, Nelson ; that the secretary write to the chairmen of the three local bodies in Westport, asking them, to meet the Westport members and the-Direc-tor with a view to securiug an annual grant towards the carrying on of technical education, -and that similar representations be made in respect of local bodies in and around Nelson and Reef ton, • conferences to be held if practicable ; that the matter of the appointment of an ; instructor in French at the Nelson Technical School be left in the hands of the Director; that the conditions of the grant for the training of teachers for 1910 be accepted by the Board ; that the Board desires to express its great . satisfaction at the renewal of the provisions enabling teachers to travel free by rail to the special training classes. . , Mr Tomkios made an application for payment on account of extra services rendered as instructor last year. It was" resolved that the claim (£l2) be paid, provided the Inspector and Director are satisfied it is in order, v , Arising out of the annual report of the Director, it was resolved that representations be made to the City Council on the fact that there- -is at present no safe locality where the' girls the Nelson schools can learn swimming and life-saving and the Council be urged to' erect marine, baths at an early date. The committee recommended the proposal for lighting the Technical School, Nelson, -by electricity, to the favourable consideration of the Board.Members generally opposed the proposed expenditure on the installation of' electric light at the Nelson Technical School. After some discussion, however, it was decided -to refer the scheme to Mr J. K. Logan (Superintendent 'of Electric Telegraphs) for his opinion. .
