EXPORT OF APPLES.

TRIAL SHIPMENT FROM NELSON OVER 5000 CASES SECURED. Thanks to the enterprise and energy of Messrs E. Buxton and Co., Ltd., and the noble response of growers, a trial shipment of over live thousand cases of apples has been secured for the London market. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Paparoa will call at Nelson for the shipment on or about March | 26th, and the firm mentioned are ar- j ranging with the growers to have their produce here in ample time. The wood, wool, and paper for wrap- ' ping and packing has arrived, and is ; now being sent out to growers. Mr ; F. R. Hallam, Government orchard i inspector, who went to Tasmania un- ! der instructions from the Government \ to ascertain the latest methods of packing and grading apples for export, is expected to return to Nelson at. the end of the week, and will immediately proceed to Motueka and surrounding districts to impart to growers the knowledge he has obtained during his visit. Mr F. 0. Hamilton (of Messrs Buxton and Co., Ltd.) who went to Tasmania at the same time as Mr Hallam, has forwarded to his firm live cases of apples taken from a shipment of 50,000 ready to be. sent from Hobart to London by the P. and 0. Company's new steamer Malwa. Fe stated the following week another 50,000 cases were to be shipped, and that space had been secured for 500,000 cases. The cases forwarded by Mr Hamilton will be on view at Messrs Buxton and Co.'s premises until Thursday next, when they will be sent on j to Motueka. The varieties sent areScarlet Permain, New York Pippin, Ribston Pippin^ French- Crab, and Prince Alfred. The apples, which have been carefully packed, are rather small in size, although there are some excellent specimens of Prince ; Alfreds, and the apples from this district compare more than favourably with the Tasmanian product. Therefore, it is to be hoped that the growers will meet with their reward. Appended is the list of growers who are shipping by the Paparoa, together with the quantities to be sent : — Cases W.
