Speaking at Glen Ihnes Mr Deakm, Federal Premier, oontroverted Mr Hughes' argument that the. mam issue of the Commonwealth elections was a progressive land tax!' The Commonwealth had the sole power of indirect taxation so long as that was sufficient ior its needs, and the Government had no intention of interfering with the States' prerogative of direct taxation. Only in extreme cases wouud the Commonwealth'iSfpo.wer of resort to direct taxation be exercised.
