At the inquest on the Beaufort railway acicdent victims Driver Montgomery, who took the engine to which, the accident was due from Bailarat to Geelong, deposed that on the day of the accident he found leaks in the air pipo, and plugged them up, when the brake worked perfectly. He reported the defect in the book at Geelong. After the accident he examined the book and found that the entry had been removed. In connection with the second nar-?' row escape from an accident at Beaufort, when the car left the rails the passenger and- two guards jumped off, the guards putting the. brakes hard on first.
