NELSON GOLF CLUB.

The annual meeting of the Nelson Golf Club was held at the Chamber of Commerce room last evening. There was a large attendance of members, both ladies and gentlemen. The chair was occupied by the captain, Mr J. H. Cock.

The annual report was presented as follows: — "I have the pleasure to report that our last season lias been a. successful one, the club having 150 members on the list. The revenue for the year was £339, and the expenses amounted to £3i20. During the- season a good deal of work has beeji done one way and another, one matter- calling tor special attention being the removal of fences surroundthe greens. This was decided on early in the .season, and the change has been much appreciated by players, and has no doubt improved the play generally. The enlargement of the greens called for more improved methods of rolling, and a horse and roller ivere procured at an expense of £31, without which the work could not have been performed. Three greens have, been top-dressed, one large new one constructed, and the remaining ones have all been manured, and it is expected the greens will be improved by this attention. Matches: A number of matches havebeen played, which were keenly contested, including a club championship. The winner on the ladies side was Miss Lucy Ledger; and on the men's side Mr H. C. Cock. An honours board has been procured and erected in the club house, the cost of same beiiHj defrayed out of the revenue from entrance moneys. A handsome silver shield lias been kindly presented by the officers of the "Encounter" for competition among members. Improvements: Owing to the damage done by vehicles at tho entrance it was decided to keep tho main gates closed, erect a small entranco gate, and have a pathway made up to the golf house. The club is indebted to air Aitcheson Smith tor his assistance in constructing tho path. The fences and stiles liave been kept in good order, and a little extra furniture procured for the club house. Afternoon tea: Tho no a/ system of the club providing tea' and ooJlecting ss. from each member was in operation last season, and generallp speaking has worked well. Reference to the balance sheet will show that there was a slight loss on the transaction. Tho annual golf ball wag held in August, and was a success in every way. The ladies are to be heartily thanked for their assistance in making the ball such a .success. Lease of links : The golf ground company has notified the club ihat a new agreement .is advisable, and after discussion the committee' agreed to the terms, wliich are that the club leases the links for five years at £150 per annum. The club has arranged with Mr Fairey for grazing during tho coming season. Course : It ' has been considered for some time past that the best use is not being made of all the ground at our disposal, and this year ifc has been decided to < r. • tend the course, making a full championship length of 6000 yards. It is tho opinion of leading golfers that a championship cannot be played satisfactorily over a course of lesser length. ' The new course will mean constructing one more green only, the present No. 3 being done away with. The alteration will cause very little confusion, as the direction of play will remain the same as at present. The thanks of tho club ale duo to Mrs J. H. Cock for providing afternoon tea on tho opening day ; the officers of the "Encounter" for a silver shield ; the captain of the club for prizes; and to Mesdames Cecil King and Lewis, and Mr A. 1\ Burnes for sundry gifts." Tho balance sheet was read by the secretary, and disclosed a satisfactory position. As evidence of the progress of the Club, the chairman read the following comparative statement between the seasons 1898 and 1909, the figr •ures for 1909 being given Oast.— Members, 32—150 ; subscriptions, £27 — 304; expenditure, £24 — 314; rent, £8— £85 ;" labour, £s— -£B7 ; greens, £5— £49. He said it would thus be seen that the progress for the period noted had been fivefold, which augured well for the solidity of the club. The election of officers .was then proceeded with. On the motion of Mr Sharp, se*r
