SPORTS AND. PASTIMES. SWIMMING NOTES.
(By "Crawl.") The present scorching weather is giving the "king of sports" a great lift, and the Maitai, Sands, and other • resorts are well' patronised. Members of tiie Nelson Swimming Club are getting into active training for the sports to be held on Saturday week. A "feature this j'ear is the large 'number of new swimmers, mostly young members, indicating that the handicapper will "have no easy task. The 100 yards championship of Nelson has .been placed on the programme,'and should be a big draw. Altogether the programme is an ex- ' cellent one, ' and as the sit© is in ■ ©very way superior to l a& t year's, the : sports should be a great success*. 1 A. Allan is in active training, and 1 the handsome new challenge cup pre--1 sented. by Dr Andrew should rest 1 in his' keeping this year. It is a ' pity that .this swimmer could not ' make the trip to Auckland to compete ' in the 50 yai'ds scratch race. As he has done 27secs for,-50 yards, he would be very hard to beat. It is to be regretted that Switzer has ."decided to dive up the game this season, especially as the club- can ill afford the loss of one. of its fastest swimmers. ./..• ; The town polo team will bo weaken- ! J ed by tho absence of Emerson, \\±o - will be competing at Auckland. -; The 1 Port team also mil lose two of its - best players : in Graham and Champion, who are* also competing at o Auckland. The town boys should '• score a win this year.
