The Mahinapua was for many years a familiar trader on the New Zealand coast, and Bhe maintained for some time a service between Wellington, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Onehunga. Subsequently she was transferred to the Tasmanian trade, and ran between Hobart and Straohan. The Mahinapua is a steel twin-screw steamer of '386 tons gross and 239 net, built in 1881 by Denny and Brothers, of Dumbarton, for the Union Company. Her principal dimensions am— l6oft by 26.8 ft by 12.6 ft.
