Mr J. H. iucAiibicr, private secretary to the Hon. A. T. Ngata, has been appointed private secretary, to the Hon. It. McKenzie in place of Mr C. E. Matthews, who becomes chief clerk of the Police Department.

The Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister ol Education, visited Rangiora yesterday, says a Christchurch telegram, and inspected some of tlie schools there. He went north by last night's boat.

A Press Association cable message from Sydney announces the death of Mr Robert B. Cameron, secretary of the Australian Mutual Provident Society. He started as office boy in the first branch of the Society, which was formed in Victoria in 1863.

A Sydney pable message states that the estate of the late Sir Frederick Darley was sworn at £45,929. The wholo is left to Lady Darley.

Th© death is announced of Mr F. G. Edwards, editor of the "Musical Times." Mr Edwards, who was a member of a well-known Essex family, was born in 1853, and was associated all his life with music.

The wedding took place the other day at Auckland of Miss Edith Batkin, eldest daughter of Mr H. Batkin, of Mount Albert, and Mr B. Bollard, son of Mr John Bollard, M.P. The happy couple have gone to Australia for their honeymoon.

Dr. Henry, the famous Gospel temperance evangelist, and Professor Bilhorn will conduct missions in New Zealand from April 10th to July 19th. They will be accompanied by their wives.

Mr Andrew Black, the well-known Scottish baritone, is about to pay another visit to New Zealand, with a. concert party, which will include Auton Tschiakov, the young Russian violinist, Miss Ibey Cross (contralto), and Miss Lilian Delaney (pianiste). Nelson, will be. included in' the tour, which commences at Wellington in three weeks time, and dates have been booked at the Theatre Royal.

Mr S. F. Sherwood, who _ was recently appointed Secretary ofthe Nelson Harbour Board, was introduced to members at yesterday's meeting of the Board by the Chairman, who said that Mr Sherwood was an old Nelsonian and competent to do the work. Th© Board, h© said, had lost a good secretary, but they had got anothor one, and he felt snre they would hay© no reason to regret their choice.

An old resident, Mr Robert Kerr, of Pigeon Valley, died at his residence on Friday last, aged 50 years, writes our Wakefield correspondent. The deceased's father was Mr Peter Kerr, brother of the late Mr John K©rr, M.H.R.. of Lake Station. Th© funeral took place on Sunday, and th© remains of deceased were followed to the graveside by a large number of relatives and friends. The Rev. Grace, of Brightwater, in the absence of the Vicar (Rev, 0. R. Hewlett) conducted the burial service. The deceased was laid to rest beside his daughter Alioe in St. John's churchyard. Members of the General Cameron Lodge of Oddfellows attended to pay tlieir last tribute of respect to their departed brother. The hymn "Rock of Ages" was sung during the service at the church. The widow son and daughter of deceased, and his mother, who lives, at River Terrace, Brightwater, will bay© th© sympathy of a larg© number of residents of the district iv their bereavement.

Mr John Smith, eldest son of the late Mr Charles Smith, of Nelson, died on Wednesday last at the residence of his sister, Mrs Durbridge (writes our Wakefield correspondent). The deceased, who was in poor health when he came here last July, had a farm at Hukanui, in the Wairarapa, where his mother and his two brothers still reside. The late Mr Smith was only 33 years of ago at the time of his death. He was buried in St. John's churchyard on Saturday by the Rev. O. R. Hewlett (Vicar of the parish), the hymn "Rock of Ages" being sung during the ceremony. .
