[Unites PrEss Association.]

Auckland, Feb. 4. George Oliver, at the Police Court to-day, was committed for trial at the Supreme Court, charged with having attempted to murder his wife at Kingsland, and to commit suicide. He pleaded not guilty. A letter found in tho accused's pocket was handed in as evidence, and it stated: "I am on the eve of committing one of the worst crimes ever committed in this district. I have' a load that is heavier than I can bear. I have been, shut out of the comforts of my family by the ignorant cussedness of my wife. I must have my revenge. My life is of no uso to me, for I have trouble on every hand, so I intend to do away with myself and my wife. She has been the means of my living an. unnatural and miserable life. In order for her not to have the benefits of the little I have, I have decided to take this course. There is sure to be someone that will blame me, but before being too rough on me, try to think how you could put up with what I have had to, in a lonely home by myself, cold, desolate, and miserable, with none to spend it with. It has preyed on my mind, and has got the best of me." The evidence of the accused's wife wa© to the effect that he had been drinking, and in consequence she had been living apart from him, but some two hours before he attempted to shoot her, she had promised to forgive him, and care for him, if he gave up drink.
