POPULATION RETURNS.

OVER ONE MILLION. [United Pbess Association.] Wellington, Feb. 3. The "Gazette" to-night states that tho population ■of New Zealand at December 31st (exclusive of Maoris) was 982,923. With the Maoris and Cook and other islands (47,731) bring the gross total to 1,042,994. The males numbered 552,165, and the females 490,829. •■•"» - ' There were 2824' Chinese (67 females in the Dominion. During 1909 the population increased by 22,281, or 2.32 per cent. The excess of births over deaths contributed 17,562 to the increase, and the excess of arrivals over departures was 4719. The Dominion birth rate during I last year was 27.29 per 100,/ and tho death rate 9.22, compared with 27.45 and 9.57 respectively in 1908.
