THE LEADERS' SENTENCES.
AN AUCKLANDTROTEST. [United Pres"> Assora> i noN.] Auckland, Feb. 2. At a meeting of the Amalgamated Society of .Engineers, held last night, the matter of the sentences on the Newcastle miners' strike leaders was discussed warmly, and it was mammously resolved^'That the AmMajd. branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers learns with regret ana astonishment of the drastic sentences passed on Mr Peter Bowling and his companions, and desires through the executive of the Strike Committee to offer them [ts warmest sympathy. The branch holds that the sentences aro further, evidence of class bias in the administration of the law, inasmuch as the extreme penalty which the law permitted was given for a first offence, and hard labour harshly included. The event should satisfy labour of the need of solid combination to send to the parliaments representatives who would keep in check suoh .legislation as that .of Mr Wade."
