NELSON HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above named Board was held last night, when there were present :— Messrs H. Baigent (chairman), Turner, Ever[ctt, Alborough, Field. Macmahon, Thorp, Ho ult, and Bisley. Accounts were passed for payment on account of the Hospital amounting to £280 5s Sd, and charitable aid £198 12s 6d. On, the motion of Mr Thorp, seconded by Mr Everett, the Town Committee's report was adopted. Dr Mackay's report re Hospital matters was considered. It was resolved to- repair the rooms at the Hospital by. papering, etc. It was resolved to procure a mincing machine for the Alexandra Home. It was decided, on the suggestion of the chairman, that h'sh occasionally be procured for the Alexandra Home inmates. . ■ ■ Mr Thorp considered that when, tne Board got the Harris bequest better tables than wooden ones should be procured for the operating room at the Hospital, also that a proper case for the instruments should be got. The report of the master of the Alexandra Home was read. He stated that two framed pictures had been presented to the Home ; that the Town Clerk had distributed three shillings to each inmate of the Homo out of the" £25 left by. the late Mr R. Snodgrass; that ten yards of Brightwater gravel had. been spread oiv the grounds ; that one inmate had left the Home, and a new one had been 'received, and there are now 35 inmates in the Home. It was resolved, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Turner, to thank tUe executors in. the estate of the late. Mr Snodgrass for the money gift to the inmates of the Home. It was resolved on the motion 'of Mr Thorp, seconded by Mr Alboroughi to procure a 400 gallon tank for the Home. " It was resolved on the motion of Mr Hoult, seconded by Mr Field, that relief -to the extent of £1 per month be given in the case of an aged and ailing "woman in the country^ The requisition for the Hospital was passed. The Inspector-General of Hospitals wrote that the first meeting of the new Board elected under the Act passed at the last session of Parliament, would be held on Friday, April Ist, and suggested that the meeting be held at the Board's present room. This' was agreed to. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Thorp, seconded by Mr Macmahon, that the contractors for sup2>h'es be asked to continue supplying - the institutions after March 31st, until the new Board was in office. The Inspector-General stated that the elections for the new Board would take place on March 16th, and it was proposed that the Nelson Board should comprise, twelve members. The Board's opinion was asked on this proposal. "It was moved by Mr Hoult that the Board agree with the proposal that the new Board comprise twelve members ; and suggest that they be apportioned as follows: — Nelson city three, Waimea county four, the boroughs of Richmond and Motueka one each, and the counties of Takaka, Collingwood,' and Murchison one each. Seconded by Mr Macmahon. Mr Everett considered ten members would be sufficient and would be less expensive. The additional member could be given, to Murchison county. He moved this as an amendment. Mr Turner seconded the amendment. On a division, only Messrs Everett and Turner voted for the amendment which was declared lost. 1 1 Mr Everett moved a further amendment, that the Inspector-General be asked by wire to inform the Board ho.v it was proposed to allocate the twelve members. Seconded by Mr Field, and on being put was declared lost. Mr Field moved as a further amendment, that the suggestion in Mr Hoult' s motion as. to the allocation of the members be struck out. Seconded by Mr Everett. On a division the amendment waß lost. Ayes: Messrs Everett, Turner, Field, and Bisley. Noes-. Messrs Thorp, Macmahon, Alborough, Hoult, and the chairman. Mr Bisley moved a further amendment, that the suggested allocation of members in the motion be amended by giving four members to Nelson city, and three members to the Waimea county. Seconded by Mr Turner, and on being put, was declared lost. Mr Hoult's motion was put, and declared carried. The chairman said that this was the last meeting of the Board that J)r Mackay would attend prior to his leaving for his visit to England. He was sure the members wished Dr Mackay a pleasant and safe trip, and hoped that he would return in good health, and much benefited from his holiday. . •' Dr Mackay thanked the chairman and members of the Board for their good wishes, and wished them goodbye. It was" resolved on the motion of Mr Macmahon,seconded by Mr Hoult, that an aged man be received into the Alexandra Home from the Collingwood district. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Macmahon', seconded by Mr Everett, that plans and an estimate be procured for carrying out the work at the Hospital agreed upon by the Board after duly considering pr Valintine's special report, widening the verandahs,- giving more light to the wards, altering the sanitary arrangements, etc, the plan to be submitted to the Health Department. Mr Thorp moved, and Mr Hoult econded, that Mr Houlker be engaged to prepare the plan and estimate. On the, motion of Mr Field, seconded by Mr Turner, Mr Bisley was given-leave to move, without notice, certain alterations in the by-laws. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Bisley, seconded by Mr Field, that the words in clause 78, "without pay^ (referring to probationers on trial) be deleted. Mr Bisley moved that probationers on trial bo paid at the rate of £15 per annum. He said he woiild leave the general revision of salaries for a future occasion. Seconded by Mr Everett. Mr Alborough moved as an amendment that probations on trial be paid £1 per month. The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder and the motion was put and carried. Tie Hospital return showed 72 patients on the list, of whom 28 were received during January, and 22 left. Of. the' latter 15 6 were relieved, and one died. During January four- cases of scarlet fever, and one of enteric fey&r, were received. The Board adjourned at 10.20 p.m.
