Mr A. M. Burns, sub-editor of the Christchurch "Press," is at present spending a short holiday in Nelson, and at Cable Bay. His many friends here will be glad to see Mr Burns once more. A press cable from Fremantle says that among the passengers by the R.M.S. Malwa are the Earl of Oxford and Sir Reginald Proctor-Beau-champ, the latter a well-known Eastern traveller, who was present at the battle of Shipka Pass with the Turks. A Melbourne cable states that Sir i J. W. Taverner's term as Agent-Gen- | eral for Victoria in London has been J extended for two. years. A London Press Association message says that Mr John Burns, President of the Local Government Board is at Paris inspecting the flood relief works,. and that Mr Lloyd-George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, is recuperating in Switzerland after the elections. On Tuesday morning the Hon. Tlios. Mackenzie, Minister in charge of the Tourist Department, visited the Bubu springs, and in the afternoon drove to Pohara beach. He was charmed with the" beauties of the district. , ■ At a meeting of Auckland citizens yesterday, it was- decided (says a Press Association^ telegram) to give a citizens' welcome and presentation address to Mr H. Brett on his ■return from England. A Press Association telegram from Dunedin says:— The "Otago Daily Times" understands that in tlfe ©vent of Dr Bell, Director of tne "Geological Survey Department, not accompanying Commander Scott on his expedition to the South Pole, Mr Allan Thomson, the first Rhodes Scholar from New Zealand, is likely to be offered the position of geologist from New Zealand with the expedition. Mr Thomson is at present assistant to Dr McLaren in working out the formation of the gold bearing country of five of the principal mines in Kalgoorlie, on . petrological ]me«. A Wellington Press Association telegram states that Cabinet has appointed Colonel R. J. Collins, Auditor and Comptroller-General, vice Mr J. K. Warbnrton, resigned. Mr J. "W. Poyntpn succeeds Colonel Collins as Secretary to the Treasury. The new State Guaranteed Advances Board appointments were made last night by the Governor-in-Council. In addition to the Minister of Finance, and the Superintendent of tahe Department. Messrs J. K. Warburton and H. Kembler (Wellington) are appointed members of "the Board outside the Civil Service, and . the two Civil Service representatives are Dr Pitchett (Public Trustee) and Professor Salmond (Solicitor-General), The Board's first meeting will be held to-day.
