ADVANGEMENT OF MOTUEKA.

OPENING UP THE BACK COUNTRY. INLAND COMMUNICATION LEA- :.-•■ FORMED. A largely attended meeting -was held on Wednesday evening, in the Anglican schoolroom, wi-ites our Motueka correspondent; for the puropse of" considering the best means ot developing the back country. The mayor, Mr F. W .Thorpe, occupied the chair and in his opening remarks, referred to the importance of the formation of a cart road to the Table Land and also that the coastal district to the northward should not be lost sight t of when .roading facilities were beius considered. iho chairman also dwelt Oil the importance of attracting tourists to the district, and providing easy access to the. beautiful Mt. Arthur district and moved, the following resolution which was seconded by Mr Manoy : — > "That with a view of securing, the opening up of the back country in the Mount Arthur district, an Inland Communication League bo established and that this meeting Tesolves itself into such, and that Messrs J. Pattie, T. G. Brougham, H. Buckeridgo, A. J. Manoy, F. G. Rotton L. D. Easton, J. H. Rankm, W. Ryder, O. C. Wilkinson, and the mayor with Mr G..'W. Boundy as Hon Secretary, be appointed a committee, .to take whatever steps . they deem necessary to. secure -the objects of the meeting. — Carried. ! Resolved on the motion of Messrs . T. G. Brougham and T. Pattie, that '. this meeting is of opinion that access should -bo given, to tho Tablo Land and Upper Karamea .districts bymeans of a cart road as the present l and prospective tariff requires it and .' the. Minister of Mines bg. respectfully j requested to place such a sum on the estimates as will enable such cart road to be formed. Resolved (Messrs Buckeridne and Brougham) that Messrs T. Pattie and L. D. Easton be requested to interview tho Minister of Mines and the Minister in charge of the Tourist Department on the matter. Several other speakers who had been frequently in the Table Land disrict spoke .enthusiastically of the mineral wealth of the district, and also of the immense area of grazing that would bo opened.
