Probably the largest load of wooi ever carted by a waggon team of eight horses in Otago passed through Cromwell on Friday morning from Mount Pisa Station. It consisted (says the Argus) of 60 bales of scoured wool weighing 7 tons 4 cwt. The driver was Mr James Tait. Speaking at Newcastlc-on-Tyne in January, Mr Edward Grimwade, a member of the firm of Grimwades,Ltd., pottery manufacturers, Stoke-on-Trent, who has-resided in New Zealand tor four years, said there was plenty of work in New Zealand and not enough men to do it. _ The trades and labour councils of New Zealand reported otherwise, but the trade un-ionists-were, doing well and desired, to keep others out. They said that men would be no better off there than in England, but that, was absolutely untrue and wicked. There was room for thousands of healthy and adaptable msn, and work waiting for them at remunerative rates. Scandalous scenes were witnessed ab the Palais de JusticeVParis, on February 5, at the trial of Renard and Courtois, the two servants who were found guilty of murdering their master, M. Remy, a retired Pans .stockbroker. Bef ore the case was called on the corridors were crowded with persons seeking admission to the court. The majority, of these were fashionably-attired women who icc^ht and struggled for priority, to the detriment of their toilettes. Special cards had been issued to many, and these favored ones wero admitted by a i i special door. The advocates, on arriv- , ' ing, found their places had been : j "jumped" by women who refused to ' give them up. A protest was made ' to the President, but he explained • ' that he' was powerless to eject those -supplied with special cards.. In the 5 afternoon so great was_ the overflow of 3 the crowd in the corridors that the 1 outer door of the Palais had to be - closed to prevent the entry of fresh, arrivals.
