AMUSEMENTS.

THE ROYAL WELSH MALE CHOIR Music lovers were afforded a rare treat at the Theatre Royal on Saturday evening, when the Royal Welsh Male Choir gave their opening recital. There was a large and Jiighly appreciative audience, almost every item in the very excellent programme submitted being encored. The choir consists of some twenty male vocalists, and their singing was a relevation — certainly finer has never been heard in Nelson. The voices were under perfect control, and blended, most harmoniously, the general effect being very fine. "The "Song of the Welsh-, men" -was given with fine martial effect, as was the "Men of Harlech," renderedin Welsh. A striking contrast was the. encore number to "Comrades in Arms," which was the wellknown hymn, " Lead Kindly Light.'' This was -given with rare devotional feeling, and was a delightful number. " Cwsg," which signifies sleep", was isurig Si Welsh and the blending of the in this number, which was unaccompanied, was very fine. As an core an amusing number, Call John," was rendered. „The 'items by the choir were: — '"Stnke.tho. Lyre," " Timbuctoo," "The Soldiers' Chorus" from Faust, and the Welsh National Anthem. The company have some very fine soloists. -Mr R. Jones,' who . is the' possessor of a sweet tenor voice, sang several -solos, and was most heartily encored. He- sang "Mary" most charmingly, and rendered as an encore* "What" Would you do with this heart, of. mine*;" which was delightfully sung. "With Mr D. Davies he 6ang in the duot^'' Tenor and Baritone,'.' and with Mr' A. Edwards. "Excelsior," both items being warmly . applauded. Mr. A. Edwards, who. has a w^l-cul-tivated baritone, sang "Thora," and as an encore "Drake's Drum," and Mr -Trevor Lewis rendered with fine •dramatic effect "The Desert " giving as an encore a spirited renqenng of "The Veteran," being compelled to : bow his acknowledgments to the warm applause which ' followed. .Another item, a quartet, " The ;' Shamrock," was a delightful contribution," an enthusiastic encore being demanded, when t&e well-known air "Killarney" was simg. Altogether it was one of the most -delightful concerts we. have had. in Nelson, and -a great .deal of praise is due to Mr. Thomas, the conductor of the organisation. Mr H. •Hughes made, a most sympathetic ac- ; ■; companist...
