Carterton, March 9. '< Burnett, a sawmill employee, who was drowned in the ..ainuioro river, was swimming horses in a deep pool and fell off one. A comrade named Basset jumped in 'to rescue Burnett, and was grabbed by the deceased, who could not swim, and Basset also was nearly drowned. The body, of Barnett was recovered by fishing with hooked linos ■ Hokitika, March 9. The body of a man named W. J. ■ Duggan, aged 75, a resident of the i Kanieri district, was discovered at the ■ bottom of the Hokitika river, near the ■ transit shed, this morning. Evidently i it was a case of suicide as a heavy window weight was attached to the body. The deceased complained yesterday of severe pains and spoke of ending his troubles. He had recentlybeen discharged from the hospital.
