N DMEROUS FAILURES IN
ARITHMETIC.

Auckland,^ March 3. " At the meeting of the Board of Education this morning a report was presented by the Chief Inspector (Mr Petrie) on theresults of the examination for certificates of proficiency. He dwelt on the fact that the large number of failures in the examintitions was d ue for the most part to aweafc ness in arithmetic and spelling. The Chairman (Mr C. J.Parr) quoted a number of statistics showing the large number of failures in arithmeticin'the various schools. ; He thought the position was a serious one,, and oiVe that demanded their earnest investigation.. .• ' .■-.■■.'■:;, ■-':"-;,■■.,:' "Mr Purdie said that the failures this year show 600 or 700 nipre than last year.
