Mr Jackson presided, and the guests included Sir A. J.. Gould, Sir Joseph Oarruthersj Sir James Graham, Mr G. -H. Reid, Mr~ Larke (Canadian Commissioner) , and Mr Coulter ■ (Deputy Postmaster-General of Canada.) Sir;, A. Gould congratulated the Union Company on the splendid specimen of naval architecture introduced to Australia. '. ' ; 5 >Mr^Littlejohn '■:< (chairman of the Chamber of Commerce) declared that Australia possessed shipping facilities second to none in the world, and in the foremost rank : stood -the Union Company.. -- -^ ■; - Mr Coulter thanked the Company for putting such a magnificent steamer in the :Vancouver trade. . The fact that, it was . willing ..to do-: so much in providing, the vessel showed the Company's faith in the trade ■ between Australia and Canada. ■: ■The Chairman Referred to the unsatisfactory relationship between the Company and the Commonwealth Government. So far there „ was no agreement for the continuance of the" service. The Makura had been built on hopes of the future.
