GARRISON BAND'S BAZAAR.

THE OPENING MIGHT. The military bazaar in aid of the funds of the Nelson Garrison Band, was opened at the Drill Hall on Oct. 2S by the Mayor, Mr J. Piper, in the presence of a. crowded audience. In bis opening remarks the Mayor stated briefly the object of the bazaar, and expressed the hope 'that it would prove a great financial success, as the Band was a good one and worthy of support. He concluded by calliDg for three cheprs for tne Band, whicb were heartily gl7en. The hall was profusely docoratea with nikau palms and Japanese lanterns, and presented a very gay nppearance; The various stalls, which are enumerated below, were ranged round the walls, and were- laden with a large and varied collection of useful and ornamental article?, the result of many hours of labour by friends of the bandsmen. In the afternoon admission was free, and there was a large attendance of children, wtio apparently were having a good time, and their investments totalled a pretty considerable sum. A programme of fancy clances was given during the afternoon. .'.;.: . ' I In .the evening .there j?as the largest attendance of the season, . tbe hall Dei ng thronged all the evening, and business was brisk throughout. The Citizens' Band turned out and inarched through town, terminating'at the bazaar. ; The programme included fancy dances under the direction of Miss Watson ; an excellent gymnastic display by members of St. John's class: bones and tambourine dusts by Messrs. Uindley and Aydon. senr., 'items <which were much appreoiated; an exhibition of fancy druinming by Mr A. Berryman"; selections by the orchestra ; and tug-of-war. In the tug-of-war the Albion wharf team had an easy win over the Nelson Bifies team, while tbe team from fWi lken : s jTemperance Hotel were no match for the Encounter men. The final between Albion wharf and 11.M.5. Encounter was a great tussle, but the man-o'-warsmen proved the victors. ■ There was a good attendance at the bazaar'inthe Drill Hall on Monday, and brisk business was done at tbe 3talls. The tug-oE- war created graa<; excitement. A team from H.M.S. Encounter and one composed of axemen (who are en route to theTadmor sports) tried conclusions, and after a good and-exciting pull, the axemen came off tbe^jcfcors. A team selected from the workmen employed on the drainage works tackled the. axemen, wnen the latter spbred'their second victory Seamao Hunter, of H. M.S. Encounter? gave a ' clever performance of swinging-cutlasses. Tho fancy dances wort very pretty, and by special request Air Arthur Berryman repeated his exhibition of fancy drumming.
